Astroboy (2009) - Imagi Animation Studios
This collection includes my environment designs for exteriors of Hamegg's Shop and Yard. Astroboy runs into some kids who take him to see Hamegg, a robot inventor who runs a robot repair shop. This set is on the polluted Earth location, so this needed to look
older and beaten. I took cues from some Art Deco building designs as a base and patched it up like something a robot inventor might do. The yard area needed to be messy and filled with old parts and machinery, with space for larger robot repairs.
Unlike the other areas in Metro City, this set was full of color and texture differences. The trick was finding the right amount of variation without getting too cluttered and noisy.
My responsibilities for this set were initial layouts, thumbnail concepts, final designs, color, and surfacing direction. I was also responsible with giving direction and feedback to the overseas animation team building the sets. I worked as an environment designer in the visual development department under Sam Michlap (Production Designer) and Jake Rowell (Art Director).
